The Salt Of The Earth

Ike Daniel died today
They're buryin' him across the way
High up on a hill where his kinfolk rest
He had a pretty good life
Five children and a solid wife
And all and all he counted himself blessed

He took his old John Deere
Up on the hill to clear
A pathway to the old family plot
But gravity and a tractor
Are a recipe for disaster
A fact Ike know but I guess he plumb forget

They called up Kale Cathey
To bring his mule and wagon
Cause nothin' else will make it up that grade
The folks will walk behind him
And the children might be cryin'
But Ike will soon be smilin' in the sweet peaceful shade

Claude Dixon's gone from strife
He fought hard all of his life
He was strong on what was wrong or right
The county tried to say
They had the right-of-way
To cut his trees and put up poles for lights

But Claude did not agree
They could not make him see
And Claude he always loved a real good fight
Each time they set a pole
He'd blow it from the hole
Old Claude he had a way with dynamite

They're the salt of the earth
And they've been since their birth
On land that their great-grandfathers had to clear
And I'm proud that I knew
If only a few
Of the last of the breed

Strong minds, simple creed
The salt of the earth

Brown Hill is strong and kind
He'll help you anytime
He spent his life a bachelor looking after
First his Mom and Dad
Then sister who once had
A fever that relieved her of her mind

Brown is a mighty fine man
He does the best he can
He makes an honest living on his farm
Spring and summer he plants the garden
Lights the 'baccer barn fire in autumn
In the winter he cuts wood to keep him warm

Once in his young life
He made room for a lovely wife
But she refused to share her home with three
So Brown faced a decision
Marry her or care for his sister
The choice for him was simple don't you see

We buried Brown today
And Amazing Grace we sang
Underneath a cold November sky
I've got his old hat on my mantle
And his knife with the wooden handle
And his mama's oil lamp that she told him stories by

They're the salt of the earth
And they've been since their birth
On land that their great-grandfathers had to clear
And I'm proud that I knew
If only a few
Of the last of the breed
Strong mind simple creed
The salt of the earth
