歷史
埃迪·范·海倫和阿歷克斯·范·海倫出生於荷蘭，20世紀60年代隨父母移民到加利福尼亞。兄弟倆自孩童時期受到古典音樂的訓練。後兩人開始接觸吉他和鼓，從此走上搖滾道路。開始他們組成了一個叫做「猛獁」的樂隊，1974年，貝斯手麥可·安東尼和主唱大衛·李·羅斯（David Lee Roth）加入，樂隊也改名為范·海倫。70年代中期，樂隊在洛杉磯附近演出，被華納公司發現。1978年他們出了第一張專輯，名字就叫做《范·海倫》，專輯中的音樂技巧和曲目編排都有獨到之處，很快就成為搖滾樂界最出色的首發專輯之一。1979年發行了相似風格的後續專輯《范·海倫II》，同樣獲得成功。專輯中還有一首上榜單曲，這是樂隊曲目第一次上榜。
1981年范·海倫發行專輯《公正的警告》（Fair Warning），此專輯製作過程中，主唱羅斯和埃迪·范·海倫的創作理念的衝突開始凸現。羅斯傾向於流行風格，但埃迪則更想嘗試嚴肅的試驗性質的音樂。專輯推出後當時的銷售並不理想，但很多樂迷現在卻認為這是范·海倫最好的專輯之一。1982年專輯《下潛》（Diver Down）發行，其中包括翻唱羅伊·奧比森的《漂亮女人》。之後樂隊開始製作音樂錄影帶，同時成為美國演唱費最高的搖滾團體，一場90分鐘演出收費100萬。
1984年發行的專輯《1984》被認為是樂隊的顛峰之作。專輯中大量使用電子鍵盤和合成器。其中主打歌曲《跳》（Jump）登上流行排行第一名，這是范·海倫的唯一一個榜首單曲。但隨著樂隊的成功，樂隊內部的矛盾卻激化，羅斯於1985年離開樂隊。
1985年薩米·哈加（Sammy Hagar）加入樂隊成為新主唱。1986年樂隊推出了新專輯《5150》，登上排行榜專輯第一名的位置。哈加的參與給范·海倫帶來的更大的商業成功，歌詞變得更加通俗，曲風也更靠向流行音樂。樂隊吸引了更加廣泛的聽眾，但部分忠實歌迷卻認為哈加時期的音樂偏「軟」。在哈加主唱時期，范·海倫一共出了4張專輯，每張都到達過榜首位置，1991年樂隊獲得了葛萊美獎。
1996年，哈加由於同范·海倫兄弟發生爭執而離開樂隊。不久以後原主唱羅思有同樂隊複合的跡象，但是最終，舊有的矛盾使得羅思無法重回樂隊。Gary Cherone被招募為新任主唱。1998年，樂隊發行了《范·海倫III》，由於風格同羅思時期和哈加時期又有不同，這張專輯成績並不理想。
